Canada’s first flatland contest of the 2010 season got underway this past weekend at Witty’s Lagoon on Vancouver Island. With what started as an overcast day quickly turned out to be a great start to summer. Zed Skimboards has been hosting events as early as 1999 and the Island Skim Sessions are a testament of a commitment to competitive skimboarding in Canada. Round One of this two part series was fueled by a mixture of solid riding, engaged spectators, sweet aromas from the BBQ and fresh jams from the DJ.
The beach was packed with these good vibes which pumped the competitors to ride hard. Riders ventured out from parts of Van City to the Island where they shared in the camaraderie of the locals. It’s always a positive scene around tidal pool sessions. Amateurs, Pros, Guys or Girls; they all share in the same stoke of progressing their technical flatland tricks. There was an obvious battle for mens first and second place as local Zed Skimboards rider Nick Fraser took on the smooth styles of Tim Ladner of Lemon Cobra Skimboards. These guys were throwing down some sick tricks but it was Tim’s big spin on to big spin out the flatbox that took the win. A notable rider in the womens division was Kira Byers who rode consistently and captured first place; take note Skim Chicks!
With the first of the two Island Skim Sessions coming to a close be sure to mark your calenders for Round Two on July 24th in Campbell River, BC. That’s all for now but stay tuned as the next flatland coverage comes to you from the Dash Point Pro/Am in Tacoma, Wa.
