Ocean Isle Beach

Posted 25 May 2010   North Carolina, Spots, USA

This is a cool little beach that is not overly crowded. It is very long and easy to ride if you catch a good tide and a good day. Even on a regular day it is still good. Some times of year like late August are great if you like to go towards the ocean (good slope), yet Spring is better for riding in the shallows (anytime is good really). When the tide is going out is the best time yet, all are good. The only disadvantage is sometimes a current can pick up. OVERALL: This beach is great if you want a good ride with some good hospitality. There are few if any shells. P.S. The center of the island is most crowded so go to the East or West End of the island.

Ocean Isle is about 45 to an hour South-West of Wilmington. If you head south on Interstate 17 (from Wilmington) you will see a huge billboard that says Ocean Isle turn here. You will get on a road that will take you about 4 miles to a stoplight. If you see a small airport on the left you’re good. Keep straight through the light and go over the bridge. You made it!!

  2. The one downside to Ocean Isle is there can be a lot of shells a few feet into the surf. If you fall your hands and feet will be cut up.

  3. Ocean Isle has been my spot for years simply due to that’s where my family goes. This is mostly a flatlanding beach. FANTASTIC for long, fast rides at low tide. At high you have a few slow rollers coming in you can sorta play around in if you’re a waverider. Either far end of the island is better; I prefer the west a little bit inward of the highrise. If you’re a serious waverider your best shot is the very far west end of the island by the inlet at high tide.

OIB has picked up in recent years in popularity as a family beach. Watch out for the kids.

  4. I’v been going to ocean isle for all my life and its always been a decent spot. Iv never been able to ride waves here, but it’s always a good time anyway. At the very east end where the island is slowly washing away, there can be some pretty fun waves. Also, High tide towards the pier can be pretty rough but most years the slope of the beach is too much to really ride.
