Escondido – Malibu Area

Escondido Beach

In the city of Malibu there is a spot. Escondido. I skimmed there hard for 2 years.1998 and 1997.I was told about this spot by a pro skimmer in Ventura in 1995.Its history goes back a ways. A lot of local skimmers have told me they wraped this spot in the 80s and early 90s. Unique because there are houses right on the sand. If the tide and or swell is too big your board will smack on the wood or concrete pilings under the houses. Wraps on this beach are among the best anywhere, i think. In part due to the houses the sand slope never goes away. The waves (and slope) you can always get to except low low tide. When its good you get a little thickness to the waves and down the line is great. Tides 6 ft and under, don’t forget the swell factor. Ok now, rocks come and go in the space of 1 or 2 days. I’ve seen no rocks on Tuesday, on Saturday the place is a rock quarry. During high tide you can always find a little area with no rocks. 1997 and 1998 no rocks to speak of but 1999 spring they came back. I go by every 1 or 2 weeks. Also the place does lack power a lot of times. Always worth a look!

Get there: PCH (hwy1)between Malibu Canyon Rd and Kanan Canyon Rd a little east of paradise cove there is a concrete bridge at street level “Escondido creek”, on the direct east side of the bridge there’s the gate and steps to the beach. Parking on either side of PCH is plenty and free.
